Filtered Water Can Be Bad For Teeth

Fluoridated water is the easiest, most cost effective way to decrease tooth decay.  Fluoride strengthens tooth enamel and the dentin (inner layer) of teeth.  That is why fluoride has been added to public water supplies for over 50 years.  It has also been added to toothpastes and some mouthwashes. However, many people are not getting the recommended amount of fluoride.  It seems that bottled water has become the rage in America.  Everywhere you turn you see someone with a bottle of water in their hand.  Most sources of bottled water do not contain any fluoride.  Please check the label to see if your favorite brand contains any fluoride.

If you use a water filtration system at home, you may be missing out on the benefits of fluoride.  Most reverse osmosis remove the fluoride from the water.  On the other hand, charcoal filters allow the fluoride to pass right through.  Be sure and check the owner's manual for the filtration device if you are unsure about the effect on fluoride.
