Diamonds Are Kanye's Best Friend?

Kanye West shows off diamond teethRapper Kanye West recently showed off his new grill on The Ellen Degeneres Show. He’s replaced his bottom teeth with gold and diamonds.

“I just thought that diamonds were cooler,” the 33-year-old hip-hop musician told Ellen. “I replaced my bottom row of teeth. I guess there’s just certain things that rock stars are supposed to do.”

When Degeneres asked if it was a removable grill, West said no. “It’s my real teeth. I replaced my bottom row of teeth.” he explained, giving a curious new meaning to the phrase “real teeth.”

Kanye West shows off diamond teethWest has suggested that he had diamonds inset in his lower teeth, but there’s been buzz about whether he entirely removed his lower teeth. West may have gotten titanium dental implants crowned with gold and diamonds, or he could be sporting a diamond-encrusted dental bridge or gold crowns over his lower teeth. Diamonds can also be applied directly to teeth with an adhesive, or small holes can be drilled and the diamonds inset.

Many of West’s teeth were lost or damaged during a 2002 car accident. Prior to his most recent dental makeover,  his lower front teeth appeared to be rotting.

Dentists, not surprisingly, are not much in favor of this sort of cosmetic dentistry.   While gold is a well-accepted dental restorative material, diamonds are quite another matter. As they’re harder than teeth, the diamonds could in fact wear down his other teeth. Risks include broken teeth, bleeding gums and gum disease.

The appearance was West’s first public interview since his much-publicized tantrum at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, when he stormed the stage during pop country singer Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech to protest her win, insisting that Beyonce should have taken the prize for “Best Female Video” instead.

West is certainly no stranger to controversy. After Hurricane Katrina, he famously stated on live television that “George Bush doesn’t care about black people.”

Cost estimates for his new cosmetic dentistry range from $60,000 to over a million dollars. West has said his are diamonds, not merely cubic zirconia.

But… am I the only one who thinks they kind of look like braces??

It’s hard to imagine this sort of thing going mainstream, but West is a prominent figure, admired by many young people. And some of them may want to follow his lead and get diamond teeth of their own… So tell me: How many of you would want this type of dentistry?
